Re: Sturgis 2008

Missed you there John but we were probably in the same areas!!
We rode out from Bremerton and stopped in Missoula for the Testical Festival. Glenda had to have some "Rocky Mountain Oysters".

We then went into Billings to see some old friends then on into Sturgis. We stayed at the Chip. Left after the ZZ Top concert on Thursday. Friend of mine broke down coming off that Beartooth mountain crossing the railroad tracks across the Big Horn river. It shorted out all his electronics so I picked up parts from the Big Dog truck and delivered them to him in Powell, WY and got him back up and running. Big Dog fixed all there bikes free at all the major events in warranty or not.
We then continued home and got caught in some nasty thunder showers and lighning. But the bike need a washing.
Long trip but a lot of fun. My sixth time but last time was back in 91.
Just short of 4000 miles for us. Glenda did good on the back.

Street Vibrations next!

Great pics,
I bet when the belt broke that was a real "oh shit" moment. All the Sturgis trips and the other traveling on the bike I still get that momentary panic thing going on when something breaks out in the middle of nowhere.
Any idea what broke the belt?
Anyway, I missed Sturgis this year, 2010 for sure.
Oh yea, like Raywood said, Street Vibrations next.

Yeah maybe this works at the campground but they just looked at me funny when I asked for a discount at the Brothel and said "we don't know any MadPuppy!"

AP,

It sure was a surprise when it happened!! The best way to explain it is to imagine 5 bikes all pulling up to the sign to get our pictures taken, with numerous tourists running around getting shots in front of the sign too, so when we pulled up we all parked a different direction in one big Charley Foxtrot. John decided to go 2 wheelin off-road style around the right side and pull up directly in front of the sign and get things started, so we all grabbed our cameras and started shooting his photo, since he was taking charge and getting into position. Then he kicked her into first gear and let out the clutch lever and it seemed to be stuck in nuetral. So he stomped on the shifter again and let out the clutch, same results.... the rest is history.

I zoomed in on the photo and I think I can barely make out the offending rock shard laying on the belt, waiting to become a gremlin!!!

Re: Sturgis 2008

Thanks for the write up. Sounds and looks like a real good ride! Maybe next year I'll talk my Wife into letting me go. How many miles between fill ups did the VROD get?

Re: Sturgis 2008

John,
Great pics. I've been twice '05 & '07.
'05 was your route through Yellowstone, and '07 we survived "the loneliest road in america" Hiway 50 that was another cool ride followed the pony express route.
I'm with you everyone needs to experience something like Sturgis. The ride to and from really adds to the felling of accomplishment. Nothing can replace miles in the saddle.

I'm one of those "vidiots" that provide TV with foder for the riders. I'm the (not so) pretty face for 2 Wheel Back Roads (a TV program) I have a 3 segement program that covers the '07 trip. It is a Sturgis survival guide that includes packing, history, ride videos of Vanocker and Spearfish Canyons, Iron mountain Rd. (pig tails), Needles hiway, Badlands, Devils Tower. and flavor shots of Hueltt WY, Deadwood, Nemo, Crazy Horse, Rushmore, ride through Sturgis main street and a couple of the venues like Thunder Road, Full Throttle, and "The Chip." The rides were shot the week before the rally so we got to run the speed limit.
I'll pony up the DVDs for your viewing pleasure Not sure if you can host video on this site, but you can at least check 'em out and pass them around.
Let me know if you're interested
Geist

he was getting 120 miles - he has a 3 gallon tank - he never ran out of gas.

Yea it was a Aww Shit moment ok... but I was thinking no big deal we will just buy a new belt and slap it on with a roadside fix errr... think again fixing the belt is not as easy as it should be - and there was no dealer with parts - so off to tow.

It was about 475 to fix - that sucked but you gotta do it.

Follow up on the tow stuff - when I tried to get Progressive roadside insurance to tow me they said yes and the tow guy said no cash please.

Now when I got back I called my insurance guy Mike Felder and he made some calls etc... before I knew it I had the head of roadside assistance from prograssive on the phone indicating they would reimburse me for the tow - my room - and an "incovinece fee" - so thats all good. We will see what they send.

If you want to get a great Insurance guy I would call Mik Felder at 800-729-2537 he really looks after you.
